Sightseeing in Kyoto included visiting the site of the
largest Bell in Japan.
This structure is one of the oldest entrance structures
in Japan.
Notice that there are three
timbers layered in the upper part of this building. Just this century
they have figured out how to do six timbers! This is an amazing
accomplishment shortly to be unveiled in some newer structures.
The delegations stand in front of the largest bell in
Japan. It takes 15 men to pull back the timber to strike this bell. The
timber is on the other side of the bell. The bell is rung one time each
year. It is hit 108 times for many blessings.
Leaving the site these very lovely stairs were laid out for
easy walking. All structures are laid out to be integrated with the land
geography.
Leaving the site once again was accompanied by crowds of supporting
lay people. The graciousness of the people and devotion to this project
was very uplifting to us all.
