This site offers information about a new line of American Buddhist nuns

It was founded by
Venerable Bhante Vimalaramsi
, Abbot of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center and Anathapindika's
Park Complex.
This is a Forest Meditation Training that leads to Compassionate Living.
Never forget
that the Buddha taught the Cessation of suffering!
Practice to
achieve this and to then teach others. |

Our Mission:
|
|
This group is about original Buddhist Practice and Dhamma based on
the earliest texts. It follows the English translations put forth by Ven.
Bhikkhu Bodhi and is guided by the training presentations by Ven. Bhante Vimalaramsi
who is the Abbot of Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center and Anathapindika's
Park Complex. |
While carrying on an abiding respect for the World Buddhist
Sangha at large
[All world communities of Buddhist monks and nuns], the nuns of the
Buddhist American Forest Tradition are dedicated to this work.
Group Profile-----------
This
group began in 2003. As we learn to practice
Right Striving/Right Effort, all the time, our energy shifts towards Observing, Practicing, Preserving and Teaching the original Buddha
Dhamma . Following the original instructions found in the
Pali suttas this training leads to living a more happy and compassionate
life. As
the true nature of everything unfolds, especially seeing HOW mind
works, a desire to help others is born in us. This ordination program is dedicated to producing
FULLY TRAINED nuns who have seen, understand, and will be able to clearly talk about the Buddha
Dhamma in simple English that can be easily understood. Women are taught
here equally as male
monks and slowly, they gain respect of elder Sangha members through their
understanding of the Dhamma. The Vinaya is followed as closely as
possible and students consult the commentaries within the study structure as well. The practice seeks to help
people reclaim their childlike curiosity,
lightness, happiness, and balance in life. As people begin to smile again,
they naturally find a more useful productive peaceful co-existence in
heir daily life in society.
The Tradition supports the
continuation of this Dispensation of the Buddha Dhamma through
faithfully memorizing and learning to teach others the Dhamma very
clearly and precisely in English. The practice is basically easy to
understand, usually leading people to immediate results, and creates unshakable
confidence in the Buddha's Teachings. The texts encourages Buddhist Meditation,
questioning of the teacher, and
testing of all that is taught through personal knowledge and vision. Nothing is
blindly accepted here! Each person comes to see for themselves the
Dhamma as it unfolds and their perspective shifts. It is with great respect that we offer to teach
others Dhamma ENGLISH as well to assist them in their own Dhamma work
within any
tradition. Offering equality in training, regardless of sex,
founded on the basis of compassion, respect, and sincere effort was the
original intention of the Buddha and is continued on for this reason
today. It is this way that we attempt to move forward towards a more
peaceful world.
Our mission, as forest nuns, is to practice smiling, just as it arose within
the original Buddhist Meditation Practice. As nuns, we renounce the
householders life, leave society and exist on Dana/donations
from lay and monastic communities throughout the world. We strive to support peaceful co-existence through understanding
the true nature of suffering,
learning to detect the arising cause of it, seeing for ourselves that the cessation
of it IS an attainable state, and
practicing the path to that cessation of suffering which the Buddha taught.
Donations
for this work can be made
to the United International Buddha Dhamma Society. UIBDS
is the supporting non-profit temple/church structure sustaining Dhamma Sukha
Meditation Center and this order. UIBDS
also helps arrange alliances with other Buddhist traditions and centers throughout
the world who hold similar interests in investigating and reclaiming the
original Buddha Dhamma for the sake of a more peaceful world. By our
reaching out to others, demonstrating how the original meditation practice
can be easily integrated into modern daily life, this brings relief, joy and
happiness to many people. Your kind support is welcome. This center is being
developed to serve you and to support the development of your
Tranquil Wisdom Mindfulness Meditation practice. The entire Buddhist monastic
tradition, including all groups, create a work great merit for all beings and will lead towards Peace among
people of all nations. The practice taught here also continues to enrich members of all faiths
through teaching relief from Depression, Anxiety, Fear, Grief, and other
suffering in this world. Please visit and join us in this effort.
Remarks:
"This project truly is a new approach to Buddhism and a refreshing adventure
in America." This group holds in great respect the entire World Buddhist Sangha
and looks forward to its support and enthusiasm towards women and men becoming equally trained and disciplined as monks
in this 21st century.
To date the remark heard most often from students when studying
meditation with our American Abbot is "Oh WOW!" or "At last, Buddhism has
finally come home 'clearly' to the West! It's not confusing anymore. It
is like one beautiful tapestry interwoven together!"
This is followed by sincere smiles and much happy energy for this
wonderful discovery of how to live more in the present moment with joy and once again
smile in life.
One student commented, "It's true! One CAN actually live in a smile
and it changes everything! It is great fun to watch people figure this out. Come and
see!" Chris F./Australia
"For me coming to find Dhamma Sukha and the nuns project was like
finally seeing Buddhism come home in the West! Wonderful!"
