Today's Date -- September 17th, 2006 American Woman takes Samaneri Vows as Novice with American Maha-Thera Buddhist Monk on American soil!A first for women in American Buddhism! The Buddha is catching up in America! As the facts come out, we discover that 10 days ago on Sept 7th, the first American Woman completed her Samaneri Novice vows with an AMERICAN Maha-Thera Buddhist monk in Annapolis, MO officiating over the service. This happened in a Buddhist Center called Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center. This was unusual because it has never happened before! Sister Khema, formerly known as Khanti-Khema, has been studying Buddhism to discover what the Buddha did for over 6 years; 5 of which have been spent in the forests of Missouri. In the past, a woman had to go to a foreign monastery to find a monk to give this ceremony if done in the US. But, in this case, the intention here was also to begin an order of American Buddhist Forest Nuns in the US and so the ceremony was therefore done right here in the forest! Venerable Sayadaw Gyi U Vimalaramsi Maha-Thera( known to his students simply as Bhante Vimala) is probably one of only three 20-yr American Theravada Buddhist monks in the world who are in the United States today. He is the Abbot and spiritual teacher for the center. He is very supportive of this new order of nuns who will join with Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center to practice the Buddhist meditation that is taught directly from the suttas in the Pali Canon. A website where more information can be found is at www.dhammasukha.org All are welcome to visit the center and to arrange for personal meditation retreats there. Dhamma talks, Meditation and sutta study is offered weekly at the center.
